Moeve's commitment to sustainable aviation

In this episode of SAF Talks, we dive deep into the world of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with Carlos Ayuso, Director of Projects and Innovation Processes at Moeve. Carlos Ayuso begins by talking about Moeve's longstanding presence in the jet fuel market and the company's recent strides in sustainable aviation. Last year, Moeve made headlines by introducing sustainable aviation fuels across Spain's main airports.

Innovation at the core

As the Director of Projects and Innovation Processes at Moeve, Carlos plays a crucial role in overcoming the technical challenges associated with SAF. From dealing with contaminants like lithium and phosphor to finding solutions for corrosion issues, Moeve's innovation team is at the forefront of developing and implementing new technologies. They often collaborate with research centers and technology companies, including Topsoe.

Pathways to 2030 and beyond

Carlos provides a clear roadmap for SAF production leading up to 2030 and beyond. One of the biggest hurdles in SAF production is feedstock availability. Moeve has secured a long-term agreement with Apical, a global leader in vegetable oil production, ensuring a steady supply for their initial units. Additionally, Moeve is fostering alliances with small producers in Spain and collaborating to develop cover crops with an investment of 1.2 billion euros, Moeve is building a bios plant that will make it second-generation biofuel energy park the largest in southern Europe, with a flexible production capacity of 500,000 tons per year of SAF and HVO. In this way, the company aims to reach an annual SAF production of 800,000 toons by 2030.

To achieve this, Moeve has secured a long-term agreement with strategic partners to ensure a steady supply and is exploring ways to diversify its feedstock sources while also promoting a circular economy.

A vision for the future

When asked about the most transformative change needed to accelerate SAF adoption, Carlos highlights the importance of technology, regulation, and feedstock availability. While technology is crucial, he acknowledges that a holistic approach involving regulatory support and sample feedstock is essential for scaling up SAF production.
